All of a sudden I have quite a few url's that show in G as widgets/ blue widgets..........with a space after the slash, and therefore G tells me that the correct URL does not exist.
Anybody else noticed this?

Yes, happens with large urls. I don't realize why, perhaps a bug.

Well yes, I can see that, except that what I don't understand is how it stops screen-scraping software for more than about the 20 minutes it would take to code round it.

It's not as if the space appears in the middle of a word, to make it look like two words separated by a space. No, it's always at the slash (or am I wrong!)

Not sure I see that this offers much at all.

I believe it is more for wrapping than anything else. Smaller screens would have problems with those long URIs and no wrapping.
