301 redirect question

Will I be credited for existing links?

I have a section of a web which I believe merits its own site. If I set up .htaccess to redirect this page to a brand new domain, returning a 301 response, will the new site be immediately credited with existing links to the old page?

I've had that happen with Google with no problems, but after the referring domain was moved to a different server Ink messed up.

Thanks Marcia, my referring domain will stay put for quite some time. Just to be clear, you were credited for existing links and the new domain immediately (or within a short time) got PR and anchor text benefits from those links?

Yes, while the 301 was up links counted and all - including PR. I let it go 404 after Ink messed up because they dumped the new site. Never any problem with Google.

That site was originally in a subdirectory of a domain site, and I moved it to space on my ISP. Everything was fine all over, including Google crediting the old backlinks for the new location and rankings and PR stayed just fine.

Then I moved the domain site to a new host - different IP number (old and new were virtual). Google stayed ok, but Ink's still a problem.

I could be wrong, but I don't have total confidence with Inktomi & 301's. Google is no problem ever.

Marcia, just wondering: How did you setup the 301? With a Redirect of just "/", or did you use a RedirectMatch?

I wonder what Google does if you use a "RedirectMatch permanent /.* ...", which will move every existing page to the root of the new domain.
