.ltd.uk domain names and Google

Any experiences (good,bad or indifferent)?

I am talking to a potential client about taking over their web site and developing it for them. They are indexed by Google, but could do with some help ;)

The only aspect of the site that I have not come across is the extension ... it is .ltd.uk

Anyone got any experience of promoting a site with a .ltd.uk name? Was it any trickier than promoting an equivalent .co.uk name?

I don't have any personal experience with .ltd.uk but this is my take on it - as far as search engines are concerned the domain should make no difference.

As far as humans are concerned... well, let's just say that even as Nominet UK allows free usage of .plc.uk and .ltd.uk to any UK PLC or Limited Company which trades offline under the name they intend to use as their domain name... the general public is not really aware of these domains.

The consequence, I would assume, is that a lot of potential website visitors who read an offline promotion will end up forgetting the ending or getting it wrong... probably typing in .co.uk instead.

Since .co.uk domains can be bought so cheaply why not set the site up using .co.uk and have the .ltd.uk domain redirect to that site?

Thanks for the input ronin ...

My initial thoughts were to put up an information site for the client's industry with a more conventional domain name, then to link this back to the .ltd.uk name showing the client as sponsor of the site.

There is an added advantage here ... the info site can use a catchy domain name, and the client can keep their (much loved) .ltd.uk site.

OK. I've talked myself into it :)

If you search for something like [ site:ltd.uk -madeupword ] then you should see that Google indexes them properly and that the Toolbar shows PR for .ltd.uk domains.

They say you learn something every day ... thanks ciml :)

Google seems to index and find .ltd.uk domains just fine. Not too many around in competitive areas though. Perhaps I'll stick to the info site idea for this one!

They're indexed so google must index .ltd.uk

Sometimes the answer is in the question...

That's a bit profound for this time of night, whiterabbit!

Being indexed and achieving a sensible position are two entirely different things, as I am sure you know. And the daftest things can prove stumbling blocks. I was looking for some input on this aspect of .ltd.uk ...
