The higher ones aren't as useful as you might think since, generally speaking they will either be:
* not on topic;
* too big to be interested in linking to you from their front page; or
* both.
From the list I made up last week the top 5 are:
* yahoo
* google
* microsoft
* altavista
* adobe
All of whom would be too snooty to do a reciprocal link I would say.
Yahoo will link to you, but paying 10000 different links, one for each version of them.
Google will link to you, but only certain days others link is vanished mysteriously.
Microsoft will link you, surely for free.
Altavista will link you, but nobody will see it.
Adobe will link you, but it will be text only.
