Mixed old and new returns in google results

old and new cached pages as if from same crawl anyone else?

A site I updated a couple of months ago & has since been fully crawled is now showing partial new and old results in google ..

it looks from the lower level links shown in some search results that all pages were crawled together ...

but sometimes the lower level pages returned are the older out of date ones .. (can see from the cache and because they dont exist on the new site)

I have not particularly noticed this before .. I guess it makes sense but I did not see this before .. is it normal service?

No real matter .. I guess I should have put a custom 404 page on the site anyhow and now I have to :-)
