Cached page reverting to the previous cached page!

I posted this question under another thread, but it's quickly disappearing...and this has me baffled, so I'm hoping someone can offer some insight.

I changed my index page during the first week of August. (Then, my page was coming up with a keyword search, but not for my major ones yet. It went live in July.) Until last week, the old page was the one in Google's cache. Then, last week, the new one was the cached page, and I was thrilled. Now, the old one is BACK as the cached page - and I seem to have dropped from the index altogther...I can only find the site through a www.mydomain.com search. I don't play any games or try any tricks...any idea what happened? Why would they re-cache the older one when they HAD the new one? What don't I understand?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated!
