When I look at some of the listings I see the url followed by 40K Aug 20, 2003

What exactly does this mean?
Page size followed by spider date?

Right.
Page size and cache date. Some people call those "fresh tags".

gatekeeper, I think we're getting off topic regarding your original question of page size and cache date...

... but there are several other forums going on the subject.
[webmasterworld.com...] is one.

I've noticed that Google is keeping things fresh on my older sites, but some pages are having problems staying in the index on newer ones - regardless of the number of FreshBot visits (or whatever it is calling itself these days).

Martinibuster mentioned that a Google scientist (at SES) mentioned that Gbot is now crawling on a multiple schedule. Some sites get it daily. Some sites get it on a 3-4 week schedule.

IMO, Google is still experimenting....
