Can we bet / gamble on this site?
I'll put my entire sites' monthly revenues of US$1 on the line here that they will be playing that music soon :-)
Why do I think so? Oh, googlebot and instinct ;-)
Anyone else get this certain feeling that the fresh / freshbot movement in Google's SERPs is not the be all and end all? And that Google will shortly do a quickstep, rather than the old full blown dance? Where the old style backlink, etc. calculations are seen?! That Google only has a partial rolling algo?
The full-blown dance is gone...I think Fritz proved that. AFAICT, that was only a backlink update. The quickstep is freshbot + new (undisplayed) backlinks, and that's where we're at, as I see it. Remember, backlinks have very little utility to Joe Surfer, so I just don't see a constant update in displayed backlinks as a priority to google, even if SERPs can reflect backlinks at a faster rate.
It still serves a few useful purposes for some of us but the way it was, was a good defense against error and saved some people a lot of grief.

In particular, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links.
Hey come on folks, give those poor people out there a break! Around here we can pretty much more or less tell what to avoid, or at least know enough to ask how, but Mom & Pop out there don't know how to begin to spot bad neighborhoods or identify spammy sites. They get emails asking for links from some of the dodgiest setups and they don't know better - they believe it.
Updating the toolbar PR gave them something to go by if they were instructed how to use it. They're defenseless now against the schemers.
Have just seen SERPs change for various keywords. Not as minor as a freshbot thing, not a full blown dance ball either. Just a nice little quick step ;-)
Some observations though;
1) Previously penalized sites make it back into the rankings. I had a theory that once you were black listed, only a gray list awaited (from where you could never make page one. But it seems there must be different black lists, or that recently penalized sites have yet to be reincluded in the s list. I hope it is the later.
2) I see it that Google has freshbot results for freshness, but a more traditional algo for main positioning which works in conjunction with freshbot. This algo still clearly is playing catch up on backlinks, or rather the calculation / SERP factoring thereof. But it is catching up for sure. I reckon the calculation is about 1 month behind in terms of what backlinks exist at any one given time. Whether it stays around this area (there are reasons why Google might want it to - so that their trad algo and freshbot can compare notes to "catch out" one night link stands such as guestbook entries), or whether it catches right up to date, we will see. My money would be somewhere inbetween ;-)
Smiling even more today. Thank you GoogeGods!

I have to admit, late one night I was messing around and thought what the heck lets see what happens. So I hit some related sites' guestbook - 5 in all. That was two months ago and I can still see about two sites that I hit.
In retro spec - like I did not know at the time - it was a bad thing to do and I would be peeved if someone did it to me. But, the experiment's results were worth it. Not in the PR - that went no where higher - but in seeing Google keep a couple of the links.
I was having the worst August..power blackouts, virus, shopping cart bug, etc. etc. And low traffic for the last two weeks.
Things were so bad that my sales were 30% off July!
And around 36hrs back, Google does their little dance and my traffic is restored!
And here is an observation. Google is splitting their traffic. The last two weeks, I was going crazy looking for pages that had fallen off in ranking and could find none. But my traffic was down. I thought there was something wrong with my code, or servers. Perhaps they were slow...but then suddenly, yesterday, while I was in the middle of fixing all identified (or imagined) problem, my traffic comes back.
Now there is no explanation for this, except that Google had split the traffic and yesterday changed something that restored the previous output.
If that was an experiment, I don't like it. If it was a bug, I hope it's squashed for good.
The ball is dead, long live the quick step.
The major reindexing thing has gone, but they have a new version that suppliments fresh bot. It is happening right now. Some sites appear to have disappeared (they have not, it is just there is a dance - oh heckle me for calling it that, it is and there is a dance). Some sites are listed on page x and page y at the same time.

Why do you feel bad!? What are guestbooks for?! I can remember when Google used to suggest you signed guestbooks! Slight difference between signing a few guest books and plastering adult adds in a rememberance book for someone recently departed.
Traffic is also down today.
One of my competitors' PR has dropped 1 notch!
