A friend of mine :) ;) :) might have an opportunity to take-over a very basic information site that has 5,000+ pages and tonnes of inbound links.

Question: how should my friend link this site to his main site for max PR boost purposes? Could he get away with putting a link to his main site from EACH of the 5,000 information pages, or would Google probably send a PR-zippo his way?

If he's got the chance he should grab it up if it's got decent PR. Re your question - will the site he'd be linking to from that one be linking back at all?

If the price is right buy it!

Personally i wouldnt link on all pages. And being a conservative i would select carefully what to link from. and i would seriously keep it from no more than 1:100 of all pages I wouldnt link BACK to that site. The number of external links from the new site out to OTHER sites not owned by you is also important. I would make sure that the proportion of links back to your site does not predominate over the number of external links as a whole. I would like to see a few sites accounting for tha majority of links out, of which my site would be one of them, but would not predominate to the extent that there is more than 10 times the links to your site, than the next most popular linked site out.

It goes without saying that those pages should link sensibly with the reader in mind.

But im conservative. Im not a professional SEO who calculates their risks against the value of domains.

If it is an expired domain, don't bother. GG says they have that one covered now. In other words, if the "created" date for that domain will change, any links to it from before that new date will (if you believe GG) be rendered useless.

If you are taking over a site legitimately. And if it is not a competitive site to the one you are linking to (be careful, this may trigger a link farm algo). Then link from every page and add a few for me too.

No link-back planned at all.
