Banners - Redirect

How Google ranks banner ad links

There are a few webistes that I am considering paying for a banner ad on, but I have noticed that all of their banner ads don't link directly to outside websites.... Instead, they point to the website the banner is on, then redirect ot the outside website.

Example link url in browser status bar:
[theirdomain.com...]

When you click the banner, it then seems to redirect to the home page of the banner advertiser.

How does this effect backlink ratings in Google? Does Google give you page rank points for this type of banner link?

Also, since the banner is a graphics file, is there a way to add anchor text? Instead of a graphics file, could I give them an html table with the same dimensions as the banner, then use html text as my anchor text...

Any advice on this would be much appreciated!

Banner ad networks typically link back to the network site so they can track your stats for you. (i.e. Click Through Rates, etc).

The downside is that Google will not count any pagerank benefit for your site from the links.

In terms of static links, most banner networks only allow graphics as this is easier for them to police. There are one or two that allow HTML to be used in ads but it's pretty rare.

Hey Olderscot,

I think I may be able to talk them into letting me put an html table in the banner spot, so I could possibly use html text...

My final question:

If this PR 7 page has about 35 crosslinks (links to pages within the same domain), but only one other outside backlink, will I get most of those PR 7 points...does Google count the other crosslinks on that page or only external links?

Thanks!

I'm afraid internal links do "use up" PR too.

If there are 35 internal links on the page and you are the only external link, you will get something like 7/36 * 0.7 PR points - where 0.7 is an estimate of the damping factor they use.
