For the first time in months.

Our backlink count has been 201 for 3-4 months. It has now jumped to 222 backlinks. This is a major development as we have moved up from #3 to #2 for our main category keyword in 2.5 million results! The site that has been #1 for the past six years has dropped to #4. This is huge!

Yes, and for a new PR3 site, too!

I was perplexed, thinking Google got the site with no links to it. My bad, I forgot that there had been one single link put up. It was ranking kind of OK for a couple of minor phrases for a couple of weeks anyway so I knew it was in there, but now it's showing that one little backlink.

I'm seeing some backlinks from PR3 pages here and there. Nice.

Still a lot of links no longer showing, it's gone way down on a couple of sites.

Gained a couple of links a few days back when using the link: command on Google, also started showing PR for the first time ever (taken 3 months to show), but lost all the other links that have been showing for the last couple of months.

Odd.

HI, Guys

IS it possible to still show no PR even now after the links for a site have increased, and one of them is a PR6 from DMOZ?

Site is showing PR0, and it has done since May when i made it live, then in June Google just showed 3 backlinks and now shows 10 & one of those is a link from DMOZ and i keep reading about all those that have seen PR changes.

A question on backlinks-How does Google decide what to classify as a BL as when I use the Google Toolbar on our site I only see 14 backlinks but if I do a search on our URL I get over 670 pages (not including our own pages). There are many big listings not included in Googles 'Show Backinks' eg Excite, DMOZ etc

Is this normal?

Thanks

The toolbar PR has been updated too.

I have a page I put up around June 1st that now has a PR3. Up until a few days ago it was showing PR0 even though it was ranking well.

auinfo, most of the times, not all of the links that come out when you search your url are considered by Google to be backlinks to you. Maybe you are using payperclick search engines and some of the links you are seeing are part of your payperclick campaigns. These will not be considered as backlinks because anyone can get those links just by paying for them.

Some real links might also have low prs and will not be shown when you search for backlinks.

I have had links from pr6+ sites added to a site of mine in the last 2 months that are not showing and no effect on ser

Can only conclude that backlinks are not being calculated as quickly as previously expected from google.

Remember

Google first has to find, then crawl pages with links to your sites. And this is the determining part of when your links will show / be counted / calculated. Currently, I think it takes anywhere between 1 week and 2.5 weeks for G to calculate this into your domain's rank from when they crawl the page with your link on it. If G are not crawling the page, make sure they can find it easily and get yourself an advanced Googlebar, then go visit that page naturally (don't just type it into the browser, click links to get there, and stay on that page for at least 20 seconds).

;-)

some of the links are from pr8 sites, and I certainly have chcked numerous times to see that the links are there, in the way advised by gg.

google must have crawled these pages

I see Google still thinks dmoz.org is Newhoo. My ODP editor profile backlinks include one from Newhoo. Not that big of a deal, but why can't Google get this right?

Ok thanks for tha, We have never exchanged or paid for ANY links (I didn't appreciate their importance up to now). I hadn't realised people are linking to us so I'll try and ask for more exchanges with PR4 or more. Up to now our site has grown very naturally and we have not paid much attention to seo

PR is for pages. Google (PR 10) can link to you from a pr 0 page and it will do you no good. If it is PR 6 pages that are linking to you there are a number of reasons this can happen. Here are but a few (co) and the methods to find them.
1.Full page frameset- actual linking page (frame) has no or low pr. View source.
2. Page is excluded via robots.txt Type www.domain.com/robots.txt in the address bar.
3. Javascript redirects-view source
4. CGI redirects (very common)- View source or hover over link although this can be disguised.
5. I recently went through my backlinks and found two that were coded wrong due to simple typos.
6. index, nofollow meta tag
7. It takes longer
