Hey all, I found this discussion [webmasterworld.com], but it's like a year old.
Does anyone know if pop-ups/unders hurt rankings at all? I know AdWords doesn't allow them, but am more concerned with "natural" rankings.
Thanks!

IMO Google went to great lengths to build a great popup blocker into the new toolbar. Why would they do that? I have no problem with them collecting that information. Do they or will they consider using it? I hope that it makes designers think before popping.

jbinbpt - It hadn't occurred to me that Google would be collecting the details of the pop ups it stopped ( I am nieve like that ) It raises some interesting possibilities doesn't it. I wonder if it is retaining the information on useful popups in the same catagory or seperating them off.

when you HAVE to provide big, high quality images, popups are the only option. My main page is about 750px wide including navbar so I certainly can't load my 900px wide photos within the site structure. I have to make them popup.... don't I?

There is an interesting thread on Page Quality [webmasterworld.com]. Google reputation is it's data and how it feeds it back to us. Google collects and rewards based on the algo. Who knows. I really have no problem with them collecting any info on what I do.
I thing the idea of a useful popup would be an interesting discussion here
