Large site (50k page) link organization

How to best pass PR

I have an "info-commerce" site with about 50k of what essentially are "product pages". What is the best way to design a site like this from a PR perspective? My index page currently has a PR5, and I want the highest PR as possible on as many product pages as possible.

All products can be organized into categories. Should I link to all the categories from the index page, or have a link to link to the categories page along with links to the top X products? How many products should I have on each "page 1 of X" category page. Links to categories on the product pages, or links to other products?

I have been experimenting with the for months now, but have not come to any major conclusions. I know listing my top 50 products on the index page has created a good jump in traffic, but that's about all I really am sure about.

Ideas, thoughts?
