Google SERPS with lots of pdfs?

Out of the first 100 results 58 are PDF or DOC

I did a search for "widgets" and the first 10 pages were flooded with pdf and doc files. 58% of the results are worthless to me unless I choose to "view as html".

Has anyone else noticed this today?

"widget" 4,120,000 results
"widget -.pdf" 3,040,000 results

I wondering if they are trying something new or planning to launch some sort of new service that will be marketed towards crawling these types of files. Also I would imagine it would be marketed to people who do not know about defining the doc type in the advanced search options.

maybe they next SEO step is to spam the search engines, create useless content, fill them with affiliate links, and fianlly add some docs and pdfs now.

at least it would guarantee top listings in google! :/
