Meta tags inside body tag

Hi we're using Miva Merchant and apparently we do not have the ability to put the meta tags within the Header tags. We can only place the meta tags within the body tags. Does this affect rankings at all? There are no other metatags elsewhere on the pages.

Thanks,
Simon

META tags must NOT be in the <body> of a document. Not ever.

Run your site through [validator.w3.org...] and fix every single error that is listed there.

You can still do quite well in the SERPs even without meta tags if everything else on the page body is perfect.

Have you tried calling the miva help desk?

Thanks for the site, I'll check it out. If I take the meta tags out of the body tag, I don't think we'll have any errors.

btw, Is validation important because the spider validates your code and gives you minus points if it's invalid or is it because the spider can't read it as well if it has html errors?

Badly formatted HTML might:
- not render in the users browser, so they can't see your site.
- trip up spiders and robots so they can't index your site.

No one knows if valid (or invalid) HTML is scored and awarded points by SE spiders. I would guess not, or if they do, that the effect is minimal.
