IP-based hosting vs. Name-based hosting

dedicated server

Hi,

has anyone any experience in this matter.

Bought recently a dedicated server and have these 2 options.

while the name based hosting domains get regularly spidered (every day), the one IP based domain is almost not spidered at all by google. A quick look at the homepage, thatīs it, last one over a week ago.

The site has several high quality backlinks and therefore google should be very interested in that site.

Would be nice to hear your opinion.

If it's a fairly new site it's normal, even if it's only the homepage. They'll come back for more.

Yah, I would just be patient. We should find more pages over time.

it shouldn't matter if you have a dedicated IP for the site or not, google should still index it exactly the same.

Also sites that use dynamic content, such as article and news sites tend to see bots a lot more. I know one of my sites has got around 250-300 bot visits so far this month, and the other which is static content has only got about 20.

not sure if this is the case or not with yours, but it is a factor to consider.

I actually have been wondering that for some time , whether google penalizes sites that are all on one ip.

I have heard that you should always put one url on on ip etc.

thoughts?

there is no way, think of these host that cram 2000 sites on a single IP server. i highly doubt google would penalize each of those sites, it just wouldn't be right.

although they should penalize hosting sites for being stupid and doing that.

One advantage of a dedicated IP is that if you move to another unique IP it makes matters much simpler all around.

Some people have had problems in the past with moving from shared, but I recently moved a site from one dirt cheap host to another, all shared IP, and even though I was concerned about it, there was absolutely no lag time where Google was concerned, it was totally seamless.

It might be because I was in control as a reseller and left the previous site location intact all through the move - so it wasn't like the server admin took it off, as has happened with other people.

I asked my hosting company if this would be a problem a while back and got this response;

It is highly unlikely they will ever impose a penalty on shared hosting accounts. The reason for this is simple; ARIN (American registry if internet numbers) basically requires web hosts to use shared hosting as much as possible, to minimize the number of IP addresses used. They are so strict that they often make web hosts paste exact lists of ip addresses and the corresponding domain names, and require written justification for the one-to-one mapping.

Yah, I would use virtual hosts without any worries. In the olden days, some ISPs would get confused and serve incorrect content (their web pages or another client's web pages) when Googlebot asked for your page. The easy check for that is just to surf to your main page and make sure that you get your content. If a regular browser finds your content, then Googlebot will be able to with no problem as well.
