Hi All,

I'm not sure if this post is in the correct forum but I'm sure if it's not it will be moved to the correct one!

Anyhow as a newbie with a website in development I would welcome advice, hints & tips on google ranking and how I can achieve high rankings. I also intend to use AdWords and would welcome any information as to the best method of attaining top ranking positions.

I'm sure these questions have been asked many, many times before, so sorry!

TIA!

Start by making a useful site.
Concentrate on a niche that isn't too big.
Think about the words actual users would type, and include those on your pages.
Make a site map so that it's easy to get to all your pages.
Use a text browser like lynx to explore your site and make sure you can get to all your pages.
Find out who should know about your site and make sure that they really do know about your site.
Be creative in marketing your site. Things like newsletters and special features help.
Personally, I recommend steering clear of any tricks like hidden text/links, sneaky redirects, etc. If you build a site to last, you don't have to stay up late at night worrying whether you'll get caught, or if someone will report spam on your site. :)
Have fun!
My fave tip from Brett's suggestions: add a page of content a day to your site.

From ths I understand that Google likes bigger sites with lots of pages. Lots and lots of them! A page a day = 365 pages a year = 3652 pages in a decade = 36524 pages in a century = .... ;)

"add a page of content a day to your site."

Which is a very good reason for having a forum on your site. Or, a site that is a forum, and then...

AFAIK, no. The advantage to adding more pages is that this increases the chances that a page on your site will match searches people do. It is obvious if you have seen some real website logs people often search using weird and inefficient search phrases. Quite often too long, and therefore too restrictive. The more pages on a topic your site has, the greater chance you'll have content which will come up on these odd searches.

The more pages on a topic your site has, the greater chance you'll have content which will come up on these odd searches.

And, in addition to that, the greater the chance that you'll have content that another site operator will choose to link to. So more pages can bring more links, which brings greater PageRank, which brings better rankings for all of your pages.

Don't forget attractive titles. I avoid clicking on top ranked sites if the title makes no sense or doesn't sound like it will help. It should stand out and grab the surfer and not jammed with keywords that make no sense.

Dazzystar0011,

I agree with rfgdxm1. I have seen sites with thousands of pages but PR5-PR6 only. I have PR6 on a 7-year-old one-page site that was a directory before there were directories and it has become the only reason to keep that domain (it is in a subdirectory).

Once you have applied all the on-page SEO techniques, you need to work on the off-page ones, mainly to have lots of contextual links.
