We have recently build some sites with a flannel textured background and are using white 12 pt Arial for the Active Links Color.

Google seems to be ignoring the white links - could it be that google thinks the links are sitting on a white background andis just ignoring them?

Or is there a new spidering pattern where google visits the home page a lot before visiting the rest of the site?

From the serps I watch Google isn't doing a thing yet about this type of stuff (although GoogleGuy said stuff was in the works):

I have seen this on a couple of our newer sites.

Can't comment on Google, but stcrim have you considered setting a toning background colour for the page just as a matter of usability?

I regularly surf with images switched off... in which case I wouldn't be able to see your links either.

A background colour will also make the page look much better while loading to a user who has a slow load on dialup.

Back to your original issue though, is the link color set using CSS? on page? on a linked stylesheet?

If linked it shouldn't be an issue as G doesn't call the stylesheet. If the style is set on page it becomes questionable.
