my host is moving me to a different server

My site has been hosted for 5.5 years with the same hosting company.

They have just told me that they are moving my site to a new server, which will give me a new IP number.

My site has always had its own IP (not a shared IP).

They did this to me a few years ago and the site was down for a few days while the DNS changes spread around the world (host in USA, I'm in Australia).

Now with Google's 'rolling updates' how bad (much worse) will this affect me (keep in mind that more people rely on my site more often now than they did a few years ago).

Also - does anyone have recent experience with an un-requested IP change? &/or does anyone have any helpful tips I could pass on to my host to make this go as smooth as possible.

Same thing happened to me. My host was able to keep the site running on both IP's for about a week with duplicate virtualhost containers. If Google updates it's DNS at least once a week you shouldn't have any problem. Googleguy, how often do you update DNS?

I had no problems when switching a bunch of domains to new host, I even switched from dedicated to shared IP's and Google picked them really fast again with no changes in ranking. However speed of Google's response could depend on PR of your site, all my sites were PR5.

Is this because the new IPA hasn't propagated?

My host confirmed old IP would remain online for a week after the move.

x_m - site has PR of 6 and usually gets the 'fresh tags'.

peewhy - I'm pretty sure my site went down durring first move (a good 3 years ago) because old site was deleted at the same time of the move - before new IP propegated.

I anticipate all will go smothly. I'll report back if I have any troubles.

If your ISP has all his ducks in a row, I'm pretty sure there's an empty shelf awaiting your site.

I would suggest you get in touch and beg for a seamless transfer.
