For loads of KW phrases my site map pops up hot on the heels of the relevant page. Is it spam? The site map for example contains a whole list of 'widget repair' 'widget sales' 'widget parts' etc. etc. and 'widget' is repeated lots of times and as a result a 'widget' search shows at #1.

The best judge is yourself, do you see it as spam?

In its present state is the page good for people who use your site.

IMO it doesnt sound as a spammy page, just a well optimised page for site users and the SERPS :)

I wouldn't consider it spam if it is designed for the benefit of your visitors. See Google's guidelines for an idea on what's acceptable.

Google Information for Webmasters [google.com]

Design and Content Guidelines:

  • Offer a site map to your users with links that point to the important parts of your site. If the site map is larger than 100 or so links, you may want to break the site map into separate pages.

Thats exactly what I'm doing, a simple alphabetical list of the pages on the site but it makes me nervous to see the pages at #1 and #2 for some KW phrases.

Don't worry about that. Site map helps visitors to find useful content on your site deep directory, that is good for your visitors, so I think you needn't worry about it!

If it makes you nervous being at number #1 for your chosen KW's maybe you should ban robots from your site?

Really, worrying about this kind of thing is just taking paranoia to a new extreme.
