allinanchor

can anyone explain?

Hi
If i type one of my targeted keywords into google using the allinanchor command e.g allinanchor:blue widgets

I get high (1st page) results for most my targetted keywords.
But this doesnt reflect on my actual results, alot of which are a few pages of results deep.

I need to know, does this mean simply my pages need better optimizing?
or does it mean that maybe google is counting anchor text from within my site and i need more inbound links with my keywords in the anchor text? Does the allinanchor command count anchor text from within my site?

My understanding is:

the the allinurl: widgets command does exactly what it says on the tin....."all in the URL".

Hence it looks for any URL's in the index that have the term widgets present.

e.g. If you do allinurl: yoursitename...it should return all your pages in the index:)

This also happens to me. Maybe your anchortext links are not fully factored in yet or possibly the new algo puts less emphasis on text in anchored links... who knows. After saying that relevant text in the anchor of links from relevant themed sites is definately a good thing to keep doing.

Roscoe - note he said allinanchor: not allinurl: ... ;) All in anchor picks up the sites who do well for having the keyword in question in the anchor text of links to that site.

Doesn´t the allinanchor command rank sites by the number of links alone, without considering the importance of the pages containing the links?

If the answer to this question is yes (I am not sure), then you could get many links from non-relevant pages, rank high in an allinanchor search, and rank low in an ordinary search.

Well it's not just number of links - it's links containing that keyword. I should think that the PR of the linking page would be factored into the algorithm too - why shouldn't it be?

Ranking highly in an allinanchor: search is really only of any use to a webmaster assessing their competition, I guess, so I wouldn't worry about trying to achieve top ranking in it over and above the boost that would give to your standard SERPs.

If you can get lots of links then get lots of links - aim for quality sites with decent PR, few links on the page and on the same theme as your site.
