How do you know if domain was previously banned?

I have seen several posts here recently about buying a domain name only to find that it has been banned or penalized by Google.

I have also seen it suggested that one should check this out before purchasing a domain.

My question is, how exactly do you check it out?

I typed one of the url's I'm thinking of buying into my address bar and it of course comes up "Cannot find server or DNS error" So how do I find out about any possible pre-existing penalties or bans? My toolbar sure isn't going to tell me in theis case.

You will see if your domain was previously owned
PS Don't buy a domain while it has the "expired" status
Google filters them and you may get problems

Hi Aroach,

In addition to archive.org I use a particular whois that tells you if a name was previously owned but it seems to be an unmentionable site around here (the system ****'ed it), so check your "sticky" mail.

Maybe someone knows a mentionable one that does the same.
