Can someone give me some pointers on what exactly googlebot sees as a link?
1. Text with hyperlink to my site?
2. Images with hyperlink to my site?
Does it matter if my linke has my own affiliate ID such as [xyz.com?afid=123...] - would Google think that this is not a "real" link?
Please help!
Thanks.

Thats correct.
as for the affiliate ID, from what I can tell "the jury is still out on that topic", but the common ground is NO.
I know of many sites which have 1000s of affiliates, some of them quite high PR who link using "specific" Anchor text, but NO pr or backlinks show up/benefit.
Shak
Most affiliate links go through different domains like LInkshare, CJ, Befree, etc. In that case, I would say no, the links are definitely not pointing straight to the site.
My affiliate links though, come straight to my site without any redirect....it simply has a '?source=' etc.
Any thoughts
If the page is slightly different when Googlebot fetches the two URLs, then both may be listed. If the content returned from the two URLs is identical then they will be merged.
In the latter case, the general view seems to be that the one with the highest PageRank wins, it inherits the PR from both URLs.
