Renaming pages

Renaming pages - pitfalls?

I'm sure this has been asked before but I've searched and can't find it - I'd like to rename most of my site pages to more meaningful keywords names and to fit in with a new navigation system but am concerned abut losing some great positions.

What is the best approach to avoid pitfalls? htaccess?

Thanks.

Set up 301 Permament redirects from the old pages to the new and leave them there for about three months.

What Krapulator said, unless you have anyone deep linking to those pages, then leave the 301's up forever.

What Krapulator said but try and get those people deep linking to your old pages to change the link. Provide them with the page that they are linking from and provide them with new link.

Thanks for the replies and tips. :)

Deep-linking isn't a real problem but I'll do as suggested. :)
