My two domains resolves in the same root directory of my site. So same content for the two domains. Unfortunately the domain name I wished to keep was dropped in the serps. How can I get back my prefered domain name in the serps? Should I send a email to google or redirect and wait till the next update?

Thanks.

pointing 2 domains to the same webspace is probably not a good idea. i would always recommend the use of apache permanent redirect, that way clever spiders will know exactly what you are doing and you will have control over which domain is in their index.

just my opinion

matrix, before you send any email to google be sure to set up the redirect like incywincy said (301) AND that people link to your desired domain. The drop may be due to the fact that more people link your second domain instead of the one you want to promote. Ask them to change their links. Your observation is a proof that google is quite smart in detecting doubs and merges them instead of dropping both sites.

If what you say is true, why would one of my sites that is 301 redirected to another site still be in the SERPs and the other site (the one receiving the redirect) has disappeared.

I am sure it is good practice to get incoming links changed, but after "301"-ing a couple of old domains to my current one I find that I am getting credit from Google for backlinks still pointing at the old domains.

In other words, don't feel that you have to get the links changed before you effect the 301 redirect. I would do that straight away.

Actually the domain I want to promote has more links than the one listed in the serps. I registered the second domain before this update may be google bot crawls the new domains first?(just a guess) so it dropped the main domain for identical content?

You guys give great support and you are friendly too :) I am happy being here.
