I can think of a few problems: 1. Google might filter all the pages of the site for those searchers with 'SafeSearch Filtering' on. 2. You could get problems for obtaining inbound links 3. Some potential visitors might not see the pages because there is some filtering active.

Johnor, Google uses a three tiered filtering, which depending on the spidered content will apply to the site. So yes, that would pose restrictions to the site. Users with filters on might be lost for the site.

I have a respectable site that of necessity has reference to 'rape', 'indecent assault', 'sexual assault', child abuse etc etc. Am I likely to fall foul of any filters and if so what may happen?

Johnor, I don't think it will be a problem. I don't know what Google uses for the filter technology, but I know of a big company that is already doing what you are doing, and they have no problems. If it fits on the site, and they want to sell those items, go for it!
