My web host doesn't allow access to raw logs. (I called and they verified this) I subscribed to WebStat (a web stat analyzer program) which shows frequent/recent visitors. However I am still not seeing any googlebot/freshbot visits for my PR5 site. I read on google support forum that these graphical programs often do not work for the information I am looking for. Can anyone shed any light on this? I'm trying to see if my site has been deepcrawled or not, and having a little difficulty getting access to the information and figuring out how to obtain it. Thanks.

Hi reneewood.

I haven't used webstats so I don't know the answer for sure. Looking at their demo, I couldn't see any evidence that it tracked spiders. My guess is that they exclude them from the stats because they are not 'real' visitors. Most of the free stats programs are not set up to track spidering activity at all.

Yup, all the major Stats software show the bot visits from the raw logs.

with your situation, I would just detect the HTTP-USER-AGENT on the pages and send an e-mail or run some script for notification if GoogleBot comes.

I don't think google is against this. But please verify at asking around. I won't pay a buck to any stats s/w for this one simple problem.

Let me know if this helps.
