Parked domain shows as duplicate site?

I registered a domain name that was an alternative spelling of my business name. Just in case people typed it into a browser, I created this domain on my server and then pointed/parked it over the main site (which is spelt differently) so it would redirect.

After the last update the alternative domain was also listed in Google with exact duplicate content of the main site! It has only indexed 12 pages of about 60+ though.

I deleted the second domain account straight away until I can work out what happened. This domain would have no incoming links and is not even mentioned anywhere except possible from a WHOIS record somewhere.

How would this have happened and should I be worried about being slapped with a penalty?

what kind of a redirect did you use?

I have a WHM/cPanel system and just parked the 2nd domain over the original one.
