Funny Phone Call

I just got a call from supposed SEO company out of the blue!

They guaranteed me number one in Google. Feeling a little bored I played along and asked for an example.

They gave me one which I looked up and sure enough, number one. I said wow!
Then I noticed a few things, no cache, they blocked it, and the page listed was not the page your taken to. Cloaked and not cleverly either.

So, then I asked them if they had ever read the Google TOS and they said they are not doing any thing wrong. I just laughed and said I was not interested.

Then they got some programmer on the phone to try and convince me that cloaking was ok and Google even encourages it.

It’s sad, because companies like this are pushing snake oil on the poor unsuspecting business owners who don't know any better.

It was actually quite fun listening to them sweat when I started asking informed questions that they never expected.

Thought I would share that great experience with the board

I've had more than one phone call like that. Once when I was in the right mood I let the guy give his whole sales spiel, then I started asking questions.

By the time I was finished with him, he said maybe they ought to be trying to hire me, not trying to sell to me.

Slightly of topic.

About a year ago I was doing door to door sales for a utility company. Got home from a hard days work and sat down to my dinner only to get a knock on the door. Answered to find a rep from the competition. so there i am in my company uniform and him in his. I could hear the gulp as I answered the door. if a salesman cant lie he suddenly cant talk :)

MrGuy, why not report that company as a full-fledged spammer! It's skumm outfits like that that give the industry a bad name.

Do as you want, but I sure as would report them to Google right today. We do everything here by the book and they are the other way around and they violate just about every rule in Google's TOS.

Now it really irritates me to see unfair stuff like that going aroud. Just last week, I had a prospective client (to be) and I had to turn him down with all his cloaking ideas. Some snake oil salesman must have given him the same pitch he did to you on the phone.

I feel really irritated when I see stuff like that.

I love calls like that. My job has provided me with a great range of knowledge in the communications arena. Like when Verizon calls to offer you Caller ID for (say) $4.95 a month and you tell them it's just a yes or no option on their switch how come it's so much? They tend to get a little aggitated and start back tracking.

Oaf357, you must be dealing with high level telemarketers. The ones I've encountered would probably ask, "What's a switch?" :)

LOL. I wonder if it was the same guy that called me a few days ago.

I have a top 10 ranking for a very competitive term in our industry (#10 of ~4,000,000), and got a call from someone who wanted to put me into the "number one" spot.

I asked him how much it would cost (trying not to laugh) and he said about $10 per click through... I calculated my daily visits on this term, at #10, and multiplied it by $10, and came up with a annual dollar figure that could pay off the national debt of a small 3rd world nation.

I let him rattle on for a while and said basically, if I am getting X hits daily for free, and from that I get $Y amount of business, that means that I would have to increase my business by $^z in order to break even on advertising.....anyhow, before I hung up I gave him free advice - next time, call the guys who are ranked 4 million, not the guys who are top ten. :)

This is funny, some guy also called me the other day offering to improve my ranking on Google for one of my sites, then I politely reminded him that I am number one in several of my keyphrases, but even then he kept on saying he could improve upon it - go figure.

I said, if I am number one how are you going to improve upon it? His response, well due to our technology and special dealings with Google, blah, blah, blah........... I hung up.

I actually reported the site that was cloaked.

It seems they are using disposable domains. So I did check out their corp site and it was clean.

It was not optimized in any way and had a very low PR so I know they are using disposable domains for themselves as well.

It would be interesting to see the looks on their faces when the prize site that they use for an example shows up gray and no where to be found!

I am also ranked very well for some competitive terms, so you think they would start at the end instead of the front!
