How many words/characters can/does Google pick up from the title tag?

in my experience it is about 64 characters, that is at least how many are displayed in the SERPS.

How many it will allow for consideration is another matter altogether.

I limit myself to 64 or less, in general.

Go to site search (at the top of the page) and type in "title tag" (without the quotes). You will find a world of information in past posts! ;)
