If I have two different sites about similar subjects, one links to the other from lots of pages and the other links back on one is that ok?

Also, if I link from one site to somebody else and they link back to my other site would that be considered a reciprocal link even though it isn't really.

I ask this because lots of people still email me for reciprocal links and I have been put off agreeing. What seems more sensible is to say 'you link to site a and I will link back to you from site b'

I wouldn't link from every page, maybe just one or two. A reciprocal link is when 2 sites exchange links, so I don't really understand what you are asking

I would say - does this make sense to your users? If so, then sure -> do as many links from one site to the next. :)

For the rest...is 'sure' an acceptable response...?

If your link partner is smart enough then he will refuse that. Your main objective to do this is to maintain 2 sites, one as a hub and the other as a authority. May give you problems in the future especially if the hub site's PR drops.
