Old meets New in Google

Why are they both in cache?

Following a major rewrite made live on 3/31/03, Google now has a mixture of the old pages that were removed from the site and also the new pages. On the cached versions Google shows April 10 on the new pages and no dates on the old. Clicking on links to the new correctly brings you to the page, on the old of course it's a 404 because the pages are gone.

Why is the old stuff still in Google? And more importantly how to get rid of it? I guess a custom 404 page redirecting to the new site is probably the first response.

Thanks for any insight!

RossWal,

Your new pages wherein you are referring to a date, are due to the Freshbot, that is the only way your 3/31/03 content would be currently showing (it infact is not in the new index at all), and it is the only reason why you would see a date on the bottom of your listing. These pages will soon go away until it is deep crawled.

Your old pages, now showing 404s are a result of these pages being crawled likely in the beginning to mid march, so these are showing in the new index. On 3/31 you removed the pages, hence the 404s for the newly indexed pages, that now do not exist.
