Are there any risks to updating my site (publishing) during the Google update?

Nope. No risks.

And freshbot is kicking about right now, so you may even see a bonus.

Definitely publish in the next week or so before the main update so your new content is included in the next update.

If we publish some pages in the next few days do you think they will show in the listings for the next update?

Should do - but im not sure when the next deep crawl is (perhaps someone else can offer a rough date).

There is a definite benefit to coordinating your updates with Google's cycle, but I wouldnt worry about it too much either way. It will just mean waiting a bit longer for the new stuff to be shown in the full index.

I tend to just update whenever.

However, if you are going for a major update (ie like a site design) then I would recommend doing it just before a deep crawl.

Also, if what you are changing is expected to have a major impact on your traffic / revenue, then look to get it online sooner rather than later. And ignore my blase attitude! :)

If I run a PR3 site, which won't return any backlinks, how is it possible to tell when my site has been updated? Will the apearance of a fresh chached page tell me?
