www.widgets.com/something/
Instead of:
www.widgets.com/something/something.htm

Please please tell me there's no reason why I can't have a site with just DIRECTORIES indexed. Right?

There's no reason at all why you can't have just the index page of directories indexed. They get indexed all the time with no problem. It's a good way to leave room to build out the section when you want to add pages to it, and there won't be a "forbidden" page if people backspace into an empty directory without an index page. Plus, if the site isn't set up to give the "forbidden" message, the directory files will show. That's not a good thing; it's not a good idea to leave that empty.
