How to find # of backlinks that excludes internal links?

This may be a "doh" question, and I am little embarassed...

Is there a way to exclude internal links from the number of backlinks? (Do you simply subtract the total number of pages in the index from the number of backlins, or is that not an accurate method?)

Also, is there some way to find out the total number of links to a domain, instead of just to each specific page?

For the entire domain I use alltheweb and search
link.all:www.mysite.com -site:www.mysite.com

You could try it for individual pages.
