to be honest your question is very difficukt to answer.
however I can assure you that there are industries with 5 million plus results and webmasterworld members dominate all of page 1 listings, that may give you a clue.
the thing to bear in mind is how "clean" a game are we playing here, and what would happen if "some" of those sites went under a "hand edit" by a Google editor.
and the answer is most would be blown out of the serps instantly.
sorry if thats not what you wanted to hear, but its the truth.
gone are the days of playing games to get to the top, trick is to be high enough to make a difference but also "clean" so you can pass a Google editor should they decide to investigate.

that Brett dude isnt to clever you know :)
I mean who told him to start coming up #1 on Google for terms such as "Google IPO" and "google has deleted my site", and #2 for terms such as "European Search Engines"

in my opinion, NO comptition/battle should be taking place, We are all webmasterworld members, and kick ASS across the serps.
different keyphrases will bring out different results, some targeted by SEOs, some by Spammers.
as long as you are getting what you deserve from your hard work, then you have won the 1st battle.

Well said. Before I discovered webmasterworld 6 months ago, my site was not in the top 500. I'm now #4. But, the higher I climb, the harder it gets. Geez, one of the top three sites is the US Govt. site for the category with a PR8! Those guys are no cheats. They are the big guns offline and online. It ain't easy, but #1 here I come!
eg: if you are selling Dirty Shoes, you do not want a description which says:
"do not buy dirty shoes...dirty shoes smell...and our shoes are not even dirty"
quite often a badly shown description/snippet will quite easily be beaten by a relevant description/snippet which may be 2-3 listings further down.
you would be amazed at the amount pf people who NEVER even look at their description, and just gloat about their position (I should know, as I was 1 of them, with a description which said "Bookmark Us" and nothing else)

Results 1 - 10 of about 50,800.
position #1
#3

But I mainly opt for most converting terms rather than the short ones. By the way - those three are all ultra competitive.

I am posting this to make you all feel better about your placement and to help you remember what it was like when you were just starting out. This will be my first true indexing. I've only had a brief #6 (freshbot-induced) ranking and I enjoyed every minute of it.
Now if you will all wish me luck for this update and hope for me that I crawl ever so slightly upward I would be most grateful. Either that, or give me your very best word of Google SEO advice--that would work, too.
The best of luck to all of you. Cheers!
What I really want is #1 for some major term for example "art" or "internet" which are terms which have over 90 million competitors and lots of searches. Strangely I looked into the term "widgets" which is actually a cool term (albeit useless for my field). It would be pretty easy to get #1 for it and then everytime someone says the word widgets on webmaster world you could mention that you have the #1 site. I imagine it would be a great ice breaker. :)
My point precisely for starting this thread. My #4 ranking for my category keyword (in 2.5m results), has given my site huge credibility.
My competitors all have deep pockets and are the recognized brands in the industry. In fact the #6 site in this category is a $3 billion company! The fact that a small fry like me can rub shoulders with them, gives me enormous brand recognition at almost zero cost.
As my site moves up, my visitors increase and so does my conversion rate. As I climb, so does my sales. At a higher ranking, people have more confidence that you are a serious player.
I also market offline. Because of my strong ranking, I now get distributor enquiries from all over the world. Distributors will search for your category keyword first and drill down the top sites looking for brands to distribute. The higher you rank, the more respect you get. Distributors are actually sending me marketing plans, proposing how they intend to market my brand in South Africa, Australia, etc.
The point is, I don't have the money to build a global brand. So, I focus on being #1 not only in "blue widgets" or "pretty widgets" but in the single keyword "widgets". Ranking high and even getting to #1 in your category keyword should be the aspiration of us all. It is THE way to play with the sharks without being eaten alive.
If anyone is interested, I can sticky you my URL so you can check out my site. I would certainly welcome your constructive comments.
I'm just happy with being #1 for all my relevant multiple keywords :)...the ones that make me money..:)
