Question about domain name inside a domain name!

widgets.com and widget.com.net

Someone owns a domain name that happens to be the qualifier of a TLD. I notice they have numerous subdomains setup in the form:

www.widgets.TLD.com, www.bluewidgets.TLD.com, etc...

including one of my domain names.

What do think their game plan is with this strategy? How could it be effective?
