How does Google handle URL's with the # sign (like page.htm#start)?

Is there a difference with "normal" URL's?

Hi,

I was wondering how Google handles URL's with the # sign?

For instance: [whateverdomain.com...]

How are these links treated? Like normal URL's?
Will they appear in the listings without the part after page.htm?

my gut tells me GB will just rip the #whatever part off - it points to an anchor on the page, and GB inherently grabs whole pages (size limitations aside)
