Regarding vertical/categorical page linking

Hello everyone, another newbie here...

Slowly building a knowledge base on Google optimization, and am tooling with the efficacy of "shaft" style categorical links (theme, etc) that allow for deep spider crawling into specific reaches of a page.

Is it best to have links to more specific sub-categories appear one at a time on a category page (e.g. Cars --> Manufacturer; Manufacturer-->Model)
OR
...Is there any detriment from having the entirety of a "shaft" appear from the get-go. (e.g. - Cars --> Manuf. --> Model)

I would recommend the latter. That way you have something like a sitemap on the homepage.
The users will also appreciate the possibility to reach most pages with fewer clicks.
Of course the links should be in some kind of pop-up divs, so that it still looks good.
