Hi,
I have a PR6 site. I have a question how many links PR6 site has to have to become PR7
thanks,

There is no way to answer that question. It all depends on:

- the PR of the sites linking to you

- the number of links on the page that links to you

My main site moved to a PR7 after the last update mostly based on a great link on a PR8 site and a few strong PR6 and PR7 links.

How did I get those links? It wasn't by sending out hundreds of emails asking for people to link to me. Instead, I've been focusing on creating quality/differentiated content and those sites found mine and linked on their own.

My improvement to a PR7 hasn't had a big effect on my rankings for my main keywords, but it has improved my rankings on other keywords I hadn't been focusing on. I'm now building optimized pages around those keywords. My higher PR is a help in competing, but it means nothing on its own.

Research keywords - build quality content - study your logs - build quality content - rinse - repeat. PR increases will be a natural consequence of the process.

As kawikadave said, I depends on ...
However, an estimation would be 10*(average number of links on the pages linking to you)

And what it the number of links inbound (regardless of quality) to your PR7 site? I have found I went to PR 5 @ 28 lower quality links, and now I have 50 (no change in PR), but the new ones are mainly PR 5 or 6. I even got a Yahoo directory listing, and I don't know if that is weighted but it looks like it is only PR 5!

Most likely just one if it is a PR8 page.

Based on sites in my field, you'll need around 1000 backlinks, although that can include some pages from your own site. This is assuming that you're getting ordinary PR3 to PR6 pages to link to you, and most of the links are on pages that contain other links.

But it can change -- my index page went from 6 to 7 and back to 6 again over a few months.

My PR7 noncommercial site has 256 backlinks and many more from low PRs - about 1000 all-told. A few links come from PR9-10 companies, although from their lower-ranking branches.
