ASP, google and meta tag generation

my programmer wants to know what to generate

We have developed an asp e-commerce shopping cart. It is now to the point where I want to make sure we are generating the meta tag information that is the best for search engine, most specifically what google likes to see.

in each product we have a section that allows customers to put in keywords for searching their site for particular products. We want to utilize this for meta tags.

can anyone push me in the right direction. I am not sure this is the correct forum to be in'

over the past while, meta tags have been given a lot less (and sometimes zero) relevance and importance by most engines. so i'd say concentrate more on optimizing the title of each of these pages with the specific product name of the item for sale on that page.
