HTML-Embedded Trackers.

Why would these be reason for a penalty?

I read an article by a webmaster that said she had quite a high ranking until she added an HTML-embedded tracker into her site (i.e. a dynamic URL linked to by an IMG tag), and that she was later penalized by Google for having this tracker.

I can't see why this would cause any problems with Google, so my belief is that something else happened with her site to decrease her rankings.

Has anyone had any experience with HTML-embedded trackers and having problems with rankings in Google? I wouldn't think so, but I'd be happy to hear thoughts.

NickCoons,

There shouldn't be any reason to be penalized with that kind of "tracker" unless it links to a "bad neighbour" (a penalized or banned site). Many people use tracking links to get their visit stats computed in "realtime"

I have no problems with them.

I #include the script just before the </body> and write the image with javascript, so the spiders are not tracked this way.
