Update results: choosey backlinks?

Dropped a link from one page to me, but not other links from that page.

Now that the update seems to have settled, I find it hasn't been good at all.

I have a relatively new site (launched Sept last year). It is getting crawled by googlebot reliably.

We have had trouble getting backlinks, but we had one reliable pr6 backlink, from one particular page. This was enabling us to have a pr of 5 on our main page.

After this update, all of a sudden our pr has dropped to one, and our pages out of the serps. And dropped that backlink. The linking page has still got a pr6.

But the page the links to us, links to other sites - and those other sites have still got that backlink recognised by google.

We have worked hard on putting up good, solid, reliable content. No spam, no outbound links from our site (yet). All relevant material.

I don't know if it was coincidence, but the freshbot gave our site a good working over in the last 72 hours - even though most of our content is reasonably static.

Any able to help explain why this might have happened?

There is a lot of backlink confusion and Pagerank dilution uncertainty going on at the moment (as of this update).

Just guessing, but could it be that your domain was bought with that PR6 link already pointing towards it?

Nope - set up the link ourselves. No penalties from previously.

Things just went south this update. Still can't work out why. :(
