Keyword Density vs. Anchor Text

Increase density to improve anchor text for sub-pages?

Let's say I have a site about widgets. I have a text-based menu on each page, with entries such as:

Acessories
Tools
Parts
Links

I am considering changing this to:

Widget Acessories
Widget Tools
Widget Parts
Widget Links

...with the goal of providing better anchor text for my key internal pages (ie. my current achor text of "tools" is not helping me when someone searches for "widget tools").

I have two concerns with this:

1) Doing the above would significantly increase the density of the word "widgets", which is the most important keyword for the site (guesstimate: 30-40%)

2) Including the "widget" prefix for each menu item is repetitive from a user perspective (they know they are on a site about widgets). I have often heard the good advice here that pages should be designed for users...

My goal is to improve the ranking of my key internal pages, without negatively effecting the rankings of the main page. What should i do?

You say that sentence as if you doubt it, who else would care about your site if it wasnt for the users?

No, I don't doubt it (that's why I said it was "good" advice :-) ) And that's why it's one of my concerns...

I have read from Googleguy (cant find the thread) that keyword density isnt a major factor for placement in the SERPS.

I dont make it a major factor in any SEO that I do and my rankings have improved greatly this month.. and have increased every month for the last 4 months.

How About Providing a descriptive Title Description for each link that includes the term widget?

That way you have the keyword and are providing an additional service to users.

EG: Full Details of Widget Tools here.

Doubt whether it would be as good as having it in the link text though.

swere - i have just undertaken the exact same change with my footer text links.

As for key word density...most in this forum are questioning its relevance to google but remember there are other search engines where its influence is more prominant.

Just make sure you keep keyword density to a sensible level and you should have no trouble.
