Backlinks Not Showing...

I have several links to my site, including a DMOZ directory listing. How come google doesn't show any of them on a backlinks search?

Does a linking page have to have a minimum PR before google will show it? I'm new, so please forgive me.

Also, how is it possible that the site that ranks first for my main keyword search has a lower PR than me. He has a three, I have a four?

If there is a main faq and tips thread, please feel free to post it.

thanks,
dolf

Hi Dolfer, welcome to WebmasterWorld.

There are a few reasons why a backlinks is not visible, like

1. the PR on the page that links to you is too low (some PR3 are shown, but usually you PR4 or higher is needed)
2. the PR on your page is too low (below PR4)
3. the link is not visible to Google (they use javascript or so)
4. the link is added after Google crawled the page

and recently, Google informed us here at this form that links to expired sites will be ignored if (a new user) will start using the same domain.

You are right, the SERP (Search Engine Results Page) of Google is not only sorted on PR. Keep reading here, and after some time you will start to understand it.

For the past 2 updates I have noticed that low PR4 pages won't show backlinks either.

I am seeing a definite problem with backlinks not showing with this last update, and PR being negatively effected because of this.

Case in point: one of my sites has roughly 60 sites linking to it, including dmoz. Some of the sites linking to me are portal sites within my niche with high PR's. Yet when you do a backlink search for my site I am showing ZERO backlinks and my PR has dropped to 1 from 5 last update.

I have seen posted on other boards the same thing happening with many other sites. Google really needs to take a serious look at the PR formula and how it effects the SERPS.

backlinks are a definite problem with this update. I had 548 backlinks and now I have 152. If I go through a list of those dropped, they are all PR4 and above.

And I have no backlink from the Google Directory even though my listing shows with a Category. What's up with that? When will that be added? Is it considered in the PR calculation as a valid backlink?

I still see irrelevant results - a realtor's site in astrology software web sites. It even went up two places! The word astrology is mentioned once on 3 pages in that site. So much for relevancy.

And another web site that had been dropped in the last update resurfaced at #11. This site is never accessible, has no title and no cache. There is another site with a meta refresh that goes to the web host. It was a subdomain which is clearly not in use anymore.

I shouldn't complain because despite lower backlinks, my site did go up one position but it does not help that there are more than just a few irrelevant results ahead of us...

thanks for your input and help!

i guess the one thing i learned is that it is a "hazy mystery" to figure some of this stuff out.
