Page Ranking logic - another surprise

Sites with more linkbacks and content lower in ranking: Why?

On Google's last dance, our site dropped a notch. We have 70 backlinks and many instances of important keywords written into real content on our home page. Our position was taken by a site with 32 backlinks and one third the relevant content.

Any ideas about why this happened?

Thanks,

Hi Jeff, welcome to WebmasterWorld!

The sheer number of backlinks doesn't say all that much.
Two of the most important factors with backlinks are the PR of those links (and don't forget, the toolbar PR is very rough), and if the keywords you are optimizing for are in the linktext.

And then PR/backlinks is only one part of the equation.

Try doing an allinanchor:"your KW' to see how your rank in the link text stakes.
