Links seem to be a big deal here. Is it bad to advertise in the form of static links on other sites? Could this get me in trouble some how? Is there bigger benefits besides just the ad itself?

Links pointing to your site are good, be they ads or not. The exception is if the site pointing at you is penalized some ways.
What you want to do is be sure the link to you is simple (not some hugely exotic/unique referer link) so that Google gives you credit for the inbound link.

...and hopefully uses your primary keyword(s) in the anchor text link.
