Stuck on the 2nd page

Hallo, I've been stuck on the "2nd page" of results for about a year now, and always watch all the Google updates to find I'm still stuck there, and can never catch up to the sites that have been on the web longer, because they've acquired more links over time from various sites.

I've contacted and done link exchanges with just about every webmaster that has a site on the same subject.

Any suggestions on making it to the 1st page?

What can I do now to get more links, now that I've exchanged links with about every site possible?

I would try and think about linking outside of your direct field. There are several approaches to that.
One of the best ways is to go via content.
Like writing articles, reviews , or similar. You could let other people use that content, in exchange for a link. Plus you could add that to your site.

There are several more things to do to break out of exchanging links with the same sites you are competing with.

For a long time I went the 'writing articles' route.

Heini's suggestion is good: It works.

However, recently I decided to break the habbit and put more time into writing content for my sites. The result? - Well it'll be a month or two before I know but, people liked my stuff on other sites, so they'll like it on mine.

A content based approach is long term but infinately more valuable I think.

Heini also mentioned 'giving content for links' - this is also good, especially if you have a good editor on the site in question. You can learn alot from what other people do to your stuff and you get he best of both worlds ;)

Well... what ever that term is that you are using to see being ranked on the second page should be "precisely", "as is" the same as all anchors pointing to the page, both internally & externally.

That precise term should be precisely in your meta title and the 1st words of the title in the term order of words.

meta description and meta keyword should have the precise term as first words.

That precise term should be the very first words on the page in written text, and as an h1 title tag + bolded... and in the very last sentence of the page and bolded.

Using a font Cascading Style Sheet will help to define an attractive style title. In addition, define body text as the precise term in the style sheet (e.g. .blue_widgets { }) and use this throughout the page as <div class="blue_widgets">term here & paragraph</div>.

If text is not in the upper most left corner of your page but an image... the image alt="precise term here" as well the image must also be a link... so if not make the link to itself... and add a title="precise term" attribute, if this happens to be a logo... all other pages of your site should have the exact same thing and pointing to this page. (this is assuming the page in question is the homepage).

Dump un-needed code of the page (like comment tags) and make the file size as small as possible (if for example your html page file size is greater than 32 Kbytes this one of your problems - search on any term and see just how many 50K, 75K, 100K etc. pages are in the top ten (not many).

I've probably have missed a few things but other members I'm sure will be along to add to this list.

/me is eating jolt gum right now. If your stuck on the second page take a look at the titles of your pages and the content on your pages and compare it to what they have. Don't go out and copy them but see if theirs is better or not.

Links from outside of your topic is good, also some articles for other sites with links to yours is a must :D
