I am getting lots of hits from Googlebot:

64.68.82.* and 64.68.80.*

I thought the robots took a break while the update was on, or have I misunderstood?

Hi everyone,
Googlebot seems to have updated the caches for my pages, but in my USER AGENT-Listings I can see no Googlebot, just a "PHP/4.1.2". Has Google chenged its bot name?

yes, be visited by the freshbot during the update is the normal case.

I'm not sure what's normal for most folks but I've never seen it before on my sites. In fact it looks as heavy as a deep crawl: 50 different Googlebot/2.1 IPs in the last 15 minutes.

I disagree.
My logs are telling these facts:
--> date without being vistited by the freshbot within the last five month

First row: missing freshbot, second row: updates

Oct: 30th - Update: Nov, 1st till 4th
Nov: 11th and 30th - Update: Nov, 28th till Dec, 2nd
Dec: 28th and 29th - Update: Jan, 1st till 4th (2003)
Jan: 7th and 11th - Update: Jan, 26th till 30th
Feb: 3rd, 4th, 6th and 19th - Update: now

As you can see, there is no relation between update and being spidered by the freshbot.

(Time is greenwich +01:00)

I agree insofar, that the activity of the freshbot is much less during the update than between.
It might be, that we are being visited that often, because we have sites with high PR and many-many pages in the index.
