why are some redirects ignored and page listed anyway?

As a general rule I've always told people to avoid getting redirects listed in the engines, but I've noticed some large sites seem to have redirects on their home page yet it still gets listed properly, how does that happen?

Depends on how those redirects are done and where those redirects are going to. There are legitimate reasons to do this.

Obviously there are reasons to use redirects. But, in general SE's view them as likely spam and don't want to list them. Even if they are not spam there usually isn't anything on a redirected page - it's just a redirect - so they don't want to list that either, which makes sense. So, why do some get listed and others do not. Seems like the larger that site the more likely it happens too. Any ideas?
